| Fantastic day down at our secret water. With my friend we explored one of the most beautiful places on the San, where we rarely go before October. Once again it was outstanding.We caught few decent grayling each, numerous trout, but the most impressing was just being there. Nothing like it in the entire universe. | ![]() |

| Snow is gone, the fishing got a bit more difficult due to melting snow. Once the level dropped it became good. Good grayling were caught, less greedy trout than last weeks - looks like they are getting quite ready to spawn. | ![]() |

Paul Procter wrote us a short river report: The San river greeted us with autumnal sunshine and a gentle breeze. That first lunchtime is something I will long remember as Blue Winged Olives hatched like I’ve never seen before, literally thousands of duns streamed off the water. As for the fishing, it doesn’t get any better than standing in one place, picking off rising grayling with small dry flies. However, what a difference a day makes. From somewhere an Artic blast rolled in over eastern Europe? I reckon it was Wojtek doing one of his strange weather rituals! Anyway, the next three days saw heavy snow and coupled with biting winds, it almost reached blizzard conditions. Admittedly, our hands and toes suffered, but the olives hatches kept coming, treating us to some superb fishing during the afternoon periods. If that wasn’t enough, spinners returned to egg lay late in the day, extending sport into near darkness. Naturally, frequent breaks had to be taken to warm up. Thankfully, our guide Richard tended a nice warm fire and was on hand with coffee to keep us going. Despite the weather, the fishing we experienced really was second to none. Paul Procter |

| Hahaha, what a joke - we have 20 cm of snow all around us, up to a meter in the mountains. Huge amount of broken trees that fell under the weight of wet snow. Fishing is still very good - check Paul Procter's blog where he describes this crazy week of fishing on the North Pole. | ![]() |

JT's river report: My autumn trip from 2008 was so good that I simply had to come back this year. The San river looked perfect as we arrived with low clear water and plenty of rising fish. My party agreed to wait until the morning before wetting a line. We must have albatross blood on our hands though, because some faceless chap in Warsaw decided to generate some electricity over night and by breakfast time the river was a foot higher and running like brown sludge! Wojtek assured us that we shouldn’t worry and that the river would clear very quickly. He was right. The influx of cold water didn’t help though and the fish were definitely off their grub to start with. The flies must have sensed this because they hatched with a ferocity I have never witnessed before in my life. Blue Winged Olives streamed off the surface as if there was going to be no tomorrow. Their spinners returned (also in massive numbers) throughout the late afternoons and have I mentioned the sedges yet? Awesome fishing. Dry fly reigned supreme for me, but some of the others opted for spiders and duo tactics. All methods were working and we caught plenty of grayling to 45cm plus a few bonus trout that didn’t realise they were out of season. We went home exhausted but ridiculously happy every night and I have already booked for next year! John Tyzack |

| John Tyzack again emptied the San but we are slowly getting used to this. Beautiful colours around, but still nice weather for most of the time. Water level rose slightlymaking fishing better. | ![]() |

| Our usual Friends group was as usually a success. This year's one however was unusuall - I'll let Jeremy Lucas speak: Absolutely the best ever trip I have had to the San. | ![]() |

I last fished the San river in 2005
as part of the England Fly Fishing Team. We were there for the European
Championships. Ever since that trip I have wanted to return. So I arrived
on September 20th with a party of six anglers from the Grimsby Piscatorials. Stuart (“Skippy”) Crofts |

| Fishing got slightly better, still difficult. Even such a champion as Stuart Crofts with his group had trouble cracking the code. Yet much better than the week before, surprisingly we had all month of fantastic weather, very warm and full of sun. I am somehow convinced this is the reason of our problems. | ![]() |

| Another week of very hard fishing. Low clear water, not much activity, no important hatches. Most fish caught are medium size trout, very active at this period of time - grayling seem still to be concentrated on very specific, tiny flies grabbed from just under the surface. Most of our top secret dry flies were useless. Nymph was the solution to catch anything reasonably sized. | ![]() |

| Difficult week. Nice weather, probably too bright with fish in the transition mode between summer and autumn. Feeding on some tiny black midges, impossible to imitate, grayling tend to ignore any fly bigger than 24. Still few good fish were caught, but generally it was frustrating. | ![]() |

| After little holiday back to the river. Shocking first evening - little rain, huge hatch, 42 fish caught. oh yes! After fishing Slovenian rivers I started doubting I live on the bank of the best flyfishing river in the world. Now I ask Sir San for forgiveness - there is nothing better on the planet. | ![]() |

| Few good days fishing in good company, followed by a little trip to the Dunajec, where for the first time fishing was so hard, even the conditions looked perfect, I started doubting in my skills. | ![]() |

| It doesn't look good - floods allover the country, San is the last fishable, but there is a limit to it as well. Hey, we got plenty of good hungarian wine :) | ![]() |

| John Tyzack, our good friend has been banned from fishing the San in next 2 years for hooking too much fish. Contact JT for details how he did this: visit his website here | ![]() |

| Finally it happened - days filled with grayling, big trout and great fishing with almost every method. River is perfect and it is just as it should be. | ![]() |

| Some rain has spoiled the fishing, but hopefully not for long. | ![]() |

| It's getting better - water is optimal, the fish cooperate. well - I have a feeling that this is going to be a good season. | ![]() |

| Beautiful spring, low water and... lazy fish. Trout sleep - it happened to me for the first time in my life to catch a sleeping trout with head in the weeds with a landing net. And it was a nice 50 cm one! Hey buggers eat flies! | ![]() |

| With Nigel - a fishing guide from Alaska we have been exploring the San in research of big brown trout. But we were defeated - the cold and high water kept the trout stuck to the bottom. Grayling that are towards the end of spawning are taking everything including streamers. Nigel has filmed also the Huchen spawning - you can see his movie here. Anyway - we had a great time and I know already who is going to be my guide when I go to Alaska. Nigel is the first guest I dared to take to the "Mordownia". You better don't ask what is that :-) | ![]() |

| April 19, 2009 | |||
| Water dropped so that the fishing is possible, though its temperature keeps the fish calm. It is beautiful and very worm - spring changes the sad gray colour of the trees into a lovely fresh green. | ![]() |
||
| April 12, 2009 | |||
| River is in flood making fishing impossible. Some heavy rain and huge storms run through the region last night. | ![]() |
||
| March 30, 2009 | |||
| River totally unfisheable. Melting snow made it too high and coffe coloured. Usually it doesn't last longer than 2-3 weeks, so I hope for some good streamer fishing in the second half of April. | |||
| March 20, 2009 | |||
| Few days fishing with Zee, our Czech friend that you might meet when guiding some of our groups, especially on the Dunajec. Nice winter here, water quite low, but the trout didn't react to streamers at all. Nymphing was successful, but main catch was grayling, which made it not very ethical in this time of year and we abandoned it. In next days it only got colder and uglier. Water is sooo cold. | ![]() |
||
| March 05, 2009 | |||
| River stays low, even very low. Once the snow starts melting it will certainly rise and get coloured for longer time as there is plenty of snow in the mountains. Fish not really cooperating, which is normal at low water in winter. | ![]() |

This won't be about the river.. You can meet Jeremy Lucas on the spring show in Newark. You can find him on one of the following stands - Fish&Fly, Hardy Greys or GAIA. Feel free to ask him everything about our holidays to the San river. |

| With Hansjoerg, Martin and Richard we went on this beautiful day to check is there any fish left in the San. High cold water made them a bit lazy, still I managed to get two good trout around 50cm and a bloody huge huchen, which I estimate was 10-12 kilos. Good start of the year :) | ![]() |

| January 05, 2009 | |||
| Surprisingly since early December water is being dropped from the lake. Probably guys at the dam are afraid after last summer's dam integrity check by the huge flood. This is the first real winter since 3 years, with a lot of snow. Temperatures as usually in January lower than in a freezer.. |
